The power supply in a motorbike is generally specified as 12 volts. Normally, however, the supply voltage is anything but 12 volts. In addition, the following effects occur:

  • The ignition produces approx. 20000 - 30000 volts, which means that narrow needle pulses of up to 100 volts or more can be measured on the cables. These overvoltages are often sufficient to destroy parts of the electronics after some time.
  • All inductivities in the moped generate a negative voltage the moment they are switched off. Although this voltage is only of short duration, it can reach minus 20 - 30 volts in the starter motor, for example.

The OV filter smoothes the supply voltage and short-circuits all pulses below a few microseconds to ground via a capacitor. The negative pulses are absorbed by an integrated diode.
